My daddy always told me that two wrongs don't make a right. So, it bodes the question, what gives us the right to kill am man because he kills another? It is not our job to judge, it's that of the maker. . . right? Papa was trying to teach me that vengeance is wrong, but what he didn't tell me was that Vengeance is also sometimes very necessary.
In 1988 my dad was at his prime. Sure, he was 38 years old, but he had a new son, a new wife, a great job. . . life was lookin' good for Brotha Bob. One night, he was outside and some random little punk came walking up from Ledgewood, and for admittedly no reason at all, sucker-punched him right in the temple. He died twice, was in a coma for almost three weeks. When he finally woke up . . . he wasn't Bob anymore. He wasn't the dad I'd spent the last three years just getting to know. He was this completely different person. An angry, malice person.
He got a third of his brain taken out. He re-learned how to walk, write and talk, though his motor skills were never really the same. He lost time, a lot. He suffered from seizures on and off for the rest of his life. The alcohol numbed the pain . . . but made it worse for those of us who had to stand by and watch. Though he survived, Brotha Bob never really lived again. That punk's name was Jamie Moore . . . and not one day goes by that I don't think about what it would be like to choke the life right out of him.
In a time when the entire state is focused on Budget Budget Budget, the numbers need to speak for themselves. Let's see, it costs $3million to prosecute, and defend a suspect, then another $400,000 PER YEAR to imprison that defendant when convicted. That same convict is sentenced to Life in prison, and is, let's say, twenty-five. . . that gives him what? 60 years of three square meals a day, access to a full gym, and opportunity to an education? With a total of $27million that the state does not pay . . . WE do.
This is what I KNOW. The cost for one lethal dose of Sodium Thiopental, and pancuronium Bromide is $86.08. I don't know how much the entire process would take, but I do know that it's far less than $27million. So yes, in that sense if a man takes the life of an officer of the law in cold blood. If he takes a father away from his children, a husband away from his wife, or a son away from his parents, I would rather pay to see that man killed, than pay to see him eat well, get in shape, and educate himself.
I would suggest a new revision to Rep. Roberge though. Home invasion with intent to kill is good, but why not just bump it up to all first degree murder. I don't think I should have to pay for baby rapers to live for free either. I could go on and on, but I should just start a new discussion about that. Bottom line, we need to go with the most economical choice, and that is to send these cold blodded miscreants to their early grave. What gives us the right? THat's not the propper question. What gave THEM the right? It's Live Free or DIE . . . and a man sentenced to a life in prison will never really live free again.
