Our Facebook page has a lively discussion about the Amethyst Initiative.
The initiative is driven by university and college presidents around the country who want to lower the drinking age to curb binge drinking on campus. Southern New Hampshire University is one of the schools on board.
We ask the question on Facebook: "If 18yr olds can smoke, drive, vote and die for their country, should they be allowed to purchase and consume alcohol?"
Here are some samples of the answers:
Bonnie Isabelle: "Maybe we should stop selling alcohol to the private sector and only have it available in restaurants and bars. This would eliminate any chance of any underage drinking completely."
Christopher Prevett: "Lower it. If my memory serves me correctly, it wasn't that many years ago that the drinking age WAS 18. I think it was just changed in the early 80's wasn't it? As others have stated, if you're old enough to die for your country, you're old enough for a bleepin' beer. Make everything 18 and be done with it."
Ann Morgan: "... lower it. If we lower it however, we must push for strict DUI laws. One thing we do not have. It will take some years for us to compare with Europe on this subject. Drive drunk in London, you go to jail and lose your license up to a year. You must have a deterrent or we'll see more fatalities."
Anna Kelly: "I 100% agree with this movement. No age number makes you responsible. It's about the culture and how these kids are raised ... It can't be so forbidden. It makes the situation more dangerous. These 'under...age' people are going to do what they want, whether they are in a safe environment or forced to do it in secret. It only seems logical if we want to consider ourselves responsible."
Bryan Shawn Macy: "Keep the legal age 21. Raise the draft age to 21. Age is not a replacement for common sense. I just missed the grandfather clause in 1981 for procuring alcohol legally."
