New Hampshire's Virtual Town Hall
New Hampshire is one of six states with a same-sex marriage law.
HB 436 took effect in January 2010.
The law "eliminates the exclusion of same gender couples from marriage, affirms religious freedom protections of clergy with regard to the solemnization of marriage, and provides a mechanism by which same gender couples who have entered into a civil union prior to the enactment of this bill may obtain the legal status of marriage."
Two bills in the 2012 Legislature address same-sex marriage.
HB 437 explicitly prohibits same-sex marriages and does not allow the state to recognize out-of-state marriages that do not meet those guidelines. It does permit civil unions.
HB 1264 establishes a religious exemption for individuals who do not wish to provide accommodations, goods, or services for marriages.
What do you think about this issue? Should the state repeal same-sex marriage? Should Granite Staters be allowed to vote in a statewide referendum?
