New Hampshire's Virtual Town Hall

The issue of whether injured or lost hikers should pay for their rescue will likely go to a study committee.

The idea of a committee to study the issue is contained in SB 128,

The House adopted the measure in February 2011, and the Senate accepted it on May 18, 2011.

According to media reports, the state Fish and Game Department routinely spends more on search and rescue operations than it has in its budget -- about $120,000 more in 2010.

The state licensing fee attached to boats, ATVs and snowmobiles includes $1 that goes to the search and rescue fund. But the majority of operations are directed at hikers, who do not pay a fee for the right to hike the state's mountain trails.

If the study committee idea is signed into law by Gov. John Lynch, it will have until Nov. 1, 2011 to finish its work.
