New Hampshire's Virtual Town Hall

As one who moved from another state to the great state of NH I would like us as citizens move to have a referendum back in place. Although we once had elected officials who might have listened to those who voted them in, they have proven most unreliable in the past few years.
Our state constitution calls for the citizens of the state to remove those in elected office and reestablish the government if it fails to reflect what the majority of voters actully want.
It is my opinion that we need a smaller, more responsive group of senetors and representatives in Concord as well as a governor who will heed the voice of the people.
Giving the people a voice through referendum is a positive start.

I am in complete disagreement with Richard Rizzi's initial post. The Constitution of the United States guarantees each state a Republican form of government; meaning a representative democracy. In addition to referendums not being legal under our state constitution, which preceded Mr. Rizzi's arrival in New Hampshire by centuries, it is easily arguable that state-wide referendums violate the U.S. Constitution specifically because of the guarantee I mention above.

All one has to do is review the Federalist Paper#10 (written by James Madison) to see that one of the greatest fears facing the founding fathers was that we would sink into mob rule, which they correctly equated with any implementation of direct democracy. As Madison said when writing of the evils of a direct democracy,

"Hence it is that such democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths."

Clearly, the United States of America is a Republic in order to specifically avoid the kind of silliness Mr. Rizzi advocates.
