In 2009, the House killed HB 228, a bill establishing standards for roadside memorials.
Under the proposed bill, families of drunk-driving victims could apply for signs to be placed near accident sites at their expense.
The signs would read "Please Don't Drink and Drive" with a separate plaque of the victim's name attached underneath. The signs would be removed after two years.
The state currently waits six months to remove make-shift memorials illegally placed on the side of state roadways.
In December of 2010 the town of Hampstead passed several ordinances regarding roadside memorials. Memorials can be no more than two by three feet and six inches in depth. Additionally, they can not be displayed for more than 90 days.
