New Hampshire's Virtual Town Hall
In recent years, New Hampshire and other states began using riprap (crushed stone) to help protect highway embankments against erosion and scour, instead of the traditional seeding process to develop a natural ground cover.
Riprap is less costly than seeding and allowing natural plants to grow to retain embankments. On the other hand, in a state that prides itself on its natural beauty, many citizens consider riprap unsightly, and it can interfere with hikers when it is used in ditches along the roadside.
The following photos are examples of riprap along unidentified New Hampshire roadways.
Do you think New Hampshire should use a natural system that protects roadway embankments, while providing a green scene for drivers and hikers or is riprap ok with you?
