Seat Belts

New Hampshire is the only state that does not require adults to wear a seat belt. Should the law be changed?

The seat belt law issue was put on inactive status. The Live Free or Die Alliance is monitoring any new developments in regard to this issue; any new information will be posted here. Under current law, only children under 18 have to buckle up in New Hampshire.

In 2009, the House passed HB 383 which called for a "primary" safety belt enforcement law. Under this law, if a police officer observes any adult driving without a seat belt on, he or she must issue that motorist a citation- $50 for the first offense and $100 for a second or subsequent offense.

But it was tabled by a Senate committee and has not been considered by any recent legislative activity.
