New Hampshire's Virtual Town Hall
As Congress debates national immigration reform legislation, the issue was also debated in the State House.
The NH House passed HCR 22, a resolution that urges Congress to develop and pass a comprehensive immigration reform package. It also protects the status of anyone who came into the country legally.
The bill was killed by the Senate on May 5.
There is some belief that states, not the federal government, should have more say over immigration policies. As has been widely reported, Arizona addressed the issue on its own:
Arizona's immigration law, now considered the toughest in the nation, makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally and requires local police to enforce federal immigration laws. It will require anyone whom police suspect of being in the country illegally to produce "an alien registration document," such as a green card or other proof of citizenship, such as a passport or Arizona driver's license.
Should New Hampshire wait for Congress to address the issue of immigration?
