New Hampshire's Virtual Town Hall
"A federal agency on Tuesday called for a ban on all cellphone use by drivers — the most far-reaching such recommendation to date — saying its decision was based on a decade of investigations into distraction-related accidents, as well as growing concerns that powerful mobile devices are giving drivers even more reasons to look away from the road.
As part of its recommendation, the National Transportation Safety Boardis urging states to ban drivers from using hands-free devices, including wireless headsets. No state now outlaws such activity, but the board said that drivers faced serious risks from talking on wireless headsets, just as they do by taking a hand off the wheel to hold a phone to their ear."
I am in full agreement with this proposed ban. I see distracted drivers allowing their car to drift into adjacent lanes almost every day. We've reached the point where we can no longer trust our fellow citizens to act responsibly on the roads. Distracted driving is nearly as dangerous as driving under the influence.

Permalink Reply by Paul Briand on December 15, 2011 at 3:54pm I don't agree with an all-out ban as recommended by the NSTB. I think there is a place for attentive drivers using cell phones for calls, particularly with hands-free, voice-activated devices that are becoming more and more prevalent. However, I'm all for a law banning texting while driving. The number of drivers -- young women in particular -- who I see texting behind the wheel in traffic is downright scary.
