New City Funded Gym?

I'm angry.  I'm stunned.  I'm appauled.  On one page of a newspaper from last week, they talked about school buget cuts, and laying off faculty from Speacial Ed, and Guidance among others. On the…Continue

Fighting for Portsmouth's Soul

Sitting at the Rusty Hammer, enjoying a fantastic Roast Beef on White toast, I was discussing the Portsmouth Political system with a great friend.  With sheer Naivety, and disregard for my own…Continue

Decisions, Decisions!

Decisions, decions, decisions!   They are the puzzle pieces that ultimately come together to ultimately form each of our lives. Some of them are easy, others carry the weight of an Elephant on steroids.  Decisions about life, love, and the persuit of happiness.  I have personally, as of late, been a terrible decision maker.  I was ashamed for a while, but after seeing most of the decions being made by the "tough decision" makers. . . well, let's just say it's always nice to see that you're not…See More

Abortion Funding ~ It should be made clear that the state money DOES NOT fund abortions.  PLanned Paernthood offers a lot mor services than abortions.  They offer Education, Parenting classes, the list is endless.  State aide is NOT…

Portsmouth School Board Fails Again!

"I need you to go grab some butter," I said to my friend as we walked the isles of the grocery store."Ok," he replied, "I'll meet you in the freezer section."  After waiting for a moment, he came up to me with a tub of margerine.  I looked at the canister, and then back at my friend."Does this look like butter to you?" I asked sarcastically with a hint of frustration."Sorry," he replied with a sly grin, "I graduated from Portsmouth." That statement right there used to make my hair stand on…See More

Workout over Homework?

I'm angry.  I'm stunned.  I'm appauled.  On one page of a newspaper from last week, they talked about school buget cuts, and laying off faculty from Speacial Ed, and Guidance among others. On the next page: an article talking about fudning for the new City Gym. I ask you Portsmouth; Really!? In case you didn't know, there are already four gyms in fine working order.  When my nephew comes to me becasue he "doesn't know how to learn," and the Vice Principal of the middle school tells me there's…See More

Fighting for Portsmouth's Soul

Sitting at the Rusty Hammer, enjoying a fantastic Roast Beef on White toast, I was discussing the Portsmouth Political system with a great friend.  With sheer Naivety, and disregard for my own morals, I placed blame on someone for my town's "yuppifacation," as I so affectionately call it.  And I was reminded by this wise, all knowing woman, that it isn't one person's doing.  "If you're going to look at someone, you need expand your horizons to more than just one person."  For the record, I…See More

Portsmouth's Mis-Education

Thumbnail
Fifth grade sex-ed; this was the topic of conversation between somefriends and I just last week. My arguement was, "that's why theyseparated boys and girls for sex-edin fifth grade," because I don't think we're supposed to know whathappens to the opposite sex during puberty. I mean, frankly my dear, Idon't give a damn. A boy's relationship with his mother, drasticallychanges once the son starts his . . . change. Mom's just don'tunderstand, nor a father his daughter. That's Life. Foreach,…See More

Robert Arnold IV replied to L E's discussion 'Marijuana' in the group Should marijuana be decriminalized? (Incubator)
Common sense dictates legalization. You're not aloud to drink and drive, why would they make it legal to smoke and drive??? Plus, all the people that take Oxycontin, Perkasit, Vicodin . . they're still allowed to drive . . . under the…

Time to say Goodbye to an Old Friend

My very first election was in 2004. Walking into the PHS Gym my head was held high, my pen grasped tightly in my sweaty palm. Filling out the registration form, I almosed tore a hole in the paper while writing "Democrat," in the Party Afilliation box. (Now I'm and Independent, but cut me some slack I was young and naive). For me, it wasn't about the presidential election . . . I already knew who was going to take it, even if I didn't vote for him. The box I was most excited to Check was "John…See More

I have given considerable thought to this in the past year as the state commission on the death penalty hears evidence about death versus life imprisonment without possibility of parole as the punishment for the most heinous crimes. Given our…

The Mis-Education of a City

Budget this . . . budget that. . . spend . . . save. . . AHHHHH! Is anyone else going CRAZY over the state of our city? Twenty-Five years I've lived here; for the first time I am considering leaving. Maybe that doesn't mean anything to the corporate world, or to any of you on the council . . . but it hurts me to think that we are becoming just another American Town.

Ferinni . . . I like you. I think you're stuck between a rock and a hard place. I think that all of these things…
