The Week in Review for May 12: Senate vs. House

There is division -- and some derision -- between the New Hampshire Senate and House.

The in-party sniping among the Republican leadership in both bodies has resulted in the scuttling of House initiatives by the Senate and the dismantling of Senate initiatives by the House.

The derision was in evidence this week over two issues in one bill -- a tax on Internet access and what to do with state budget surplus money.

The effort to ban any tax on Internet access…

'A better future': Guest post by Sen. Lou D'Allesandro

As we look around and address the most recent recession, we have a tendency to lose hope and not recognize some of the good things that are happening here in our State of New Hampshire. Although many are still looking for work, our unemployment rate remains at one of the lowest levels in the nation and unemployment claims continue to

trend downward.…

On June 27, Gov. John Lynch vetoed a bill that would have required New Hampshire voters to show a photo identification, or obtain a waiver, before they would be allowed to cast a ballot.

Proponents of the measure said it was necessary to reduce the possibility of fraud at the polls, beginning with the fall 2012 elections. The governor, in explaining his veto to the Union Leader, said,…

Legislation keeps state’s hands off JUA money

The New Hampshire Supreme Court has already said that the state isn’t entitled to money from a medical malpractice fund.

A bill in the 2011 Legislature underscores the point: It forbids the state from taking surplus funds from the Joint Underwriting Association.

NH GOP majorities revisiting use of deadly force: Dec. 28 2010

"Four years ago, Gov. John Lynch blocked gun rights advocates' effort to expand a person's right to use deadly force in self-defense without first attempting to retreat.

The legislation will be back this coming year, and this time, Lynch may not be able to stop its passage.

In his veto message blocking the 2006 gun bill, Lynch, a Democrat, said he wanted to avoid a law that 'would authorize any shopper to instantly shoot and kill a thief who had grabbed or tugged at the…

2010 election week in review: Blue to red super-majorities, 2012 in motion

It was a week that New Hampshire turned from blue to red in terms of Republicans who are now the majority in the New Hampshire House and Senate and in who represents us in Washington, D.C.

The only patch of blue of significance is John Lynch, the Democrat who won re-election as governor for a fourth historic term.

There will be some recounts across the state -- 21 in the House, one in the Senate -- as a result of close or disputed results from last Tuesday's… Continue

New Hampshire races illustrate national trends

Tuesday night’s election results echoed a trend seen throughout American history — in a poor economy the challengers win.

Political pundits rightly predicted Republican wins in House and Senate races across the country, including New Hampshire, and linked the results to voter frustration with near double-digit unemployment and disapproval over President Barack Obama’s job performance.

Yet, even the results for races for our State House and Senate expose a similar trend —… Continue

House and Senate agree on budget bill

The budget bill to close the state's deficit passed through the Legislature, but SS HB 1 was by no means wildly popular.

It now goes to Gov. John Lynch for his signature.

The Legislature, meanwhile, was split in its handling of… Continue

The Senate had approved the measure 14-9 early today, but the House killed it 191-141 later in the day.
