Political week in review for April 18: Senate panel makes changes to budget

The Senate Finance Committee last week started making changes to the state budget approved by the House.



Included among the alterations was elimination of the controversial “at-will” employee amendment and restoration of about $200 million in cuts in social service programs.

The Week in Review: Tobacco tax, flag flap and failing grades

There's much debate among LFDA members over legislation that would reduce the state's tax on tobacco products.

The Senate Ways and Means Committee is considering HB 156 - a bill that's already passed the House of Representatives.

The legislation would reduce the tax on cigarettes from $1.78 to $1.68 per pack. The tax on other tobacco products would decrease 17%.

Political week in review for April 11: Senate now has budget, GOP refocus

The Senate now has the proposed state budget for the next biennium and it will take a different approach to the numbers.



While House budget writers determined first what the revenues might be in the creation of their $10.17 billion budget, the Senate Finance Committee will look at expenses first, then decide if there is revenue to support them.
