New Hampshire's Virtual Town Hall

The Week in Review: Sonner snub, park sponsorships and eminent domain

The LFDA found itself right in the middle of a "debate debate" this week.

Republican congressional candidate Wesley Sonner (CD-2) was not invited to participate in the WMUR/Union Leader sponsored debate on September 8th.

Sonner (an LFDA member) posted this blog on the Virtual Town Hall pleading his case and asking members to call/email the news outlets.

WMUR and the Union Leader said:

A variety of objective factors were considered in making this decision (including, among other things, amount and nature of campaign activities, whether the campaign has a staff and volunteers, level of financial support from the community, public opinion polls etc.). Our news departments make these news judgments to assure the most newsworthy candidates are given enough time in the debate to explain their positions adequately.

How do LFDA members feel?

Bonnie Isabelle: ALL candidates should have equal access to equal coverage. Who gives WMUR or any one else the authority to decide who I can and cannot listen to....basically they're choosing who runs and who doesn't....NO, I DO NOT AGREE!!!

Bruce MacMahon: This debate is taking... place six days before the primary. If you haven't built up a sizable
base of support and developed substantial name recognition by this point in the process, sorry, but you gotta be realistic.

You'll find more feedback on our Facebook page.

Sponsors Wanted?
Saddled with a $1.8 million budget deficit, the state park system is seeking alternative sources of revenue (it does not receive federal or state funding). One option under consideration? Corporate sponsorships. Park department officials are considering a deal with Eastern Mountain Sports.

A partnership means NH park personnel may wear uniforms with the EMS logo, and EMS might offer kayaking lessons to park users and promote the state parks in its stores.

Eminent Domain
The newest issue to hit the Virtual Town Hall - eminent domain.

Eminent domain allows the state to take private property for public use (generally road and highway projects) with the land owner receiving fair compensation.

An Alstead couple is trying to negotiate with the state for an alternative to a proposed road project along Route 123 that would take their property.

How do you feel about eminent domain? Is it a necessary means for the state to acquire land for the greater good?

Election Central
We are less than two weeks away from the state primaries (Sept. 14). Do you know where the federal candidates stand on issues? Do you know which candidates are running for state House and Senate in your district? Check out our comprehensive Election Central voter guide for information on all the candidates.

Enjoy the holiday weekend!
